How to Open a DXF File on Windows, Mac and Phone
A DXF file is a CAD drawing. It holds lines, circles, arcs, text and layers. You can open one in a few seconds, even if you have never used CAD software. This guide shows you how, step by step, on every common device.
There are three main ways to open a DXF file:
- In your web browser, with a free online DXF viewer. Fastest, and nothing to install.
- In a free desktop program, such as LibreCAD or DWG TrueView. Good if you open DXF files often.
- In full CAD software, such as AutoCAD. Best when you need to edit the drawing.
Pick the method that matches what you need. If you only want to look at a drawing or check a size, method one is all you need.
Method 1: Open a DXF file online in your browser
This works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone and Android. You only need a modern browser like Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox.
- Go to our free online DXF viewer.
- Click Choose DXF file. You can also drag the file from your folder straight into the viewer.
- Pick your DXF file. The drawing appears in a second or two.
- Scroll or pinch to zoom. Drag to move around. Double-click to fit the whole drawing on screen.
The viewer reads the file inside your browser. It does not upload it anywhere. That matters if the drawing is for a client or under an NDA.
What you can do in the online viewer
- Turn layers on and off to hide clutter.
- Measure the distance between two points.
- Switch between a dark and a light background.
- Save the view as a PNG image or an SVG file.
- Go full screen for large plans.
You cannot edit the drawing in a viewer. For that, use method 2 or 3.
Method 2: Open a DXF file with a free desktop program
If you work with DXF files every week, a desktop program is handy. These options are free.
On Windows: DWG TrueView
- Download DWG TrueView from the Autodesk website and install it.
- Open the program and click the Open button.
- In the file type box, choose DXF.
- Pick your file and click Open.
DWG TrueView shows drawings the same way AutoCAD does. It cannot edit them. The download is large, so give it a few minutes.
On Windows, Mac or Linux: LibreCAD
- Download LibreCAD from its official website and install it.
- Open LibreCAD and go to File, then Open.
- Select your DXF file.
- Use the mouse wheel to zoom. Press the auto zoom button to fit the drawing.
LibreCAD can also edit and save DXF files. It is a good free choice if you need to fix a line or change text.
On any computer: QCAD Community Edition
QCAD works much like LibreCAD. Open it, go to File, then Open, and pick the DXF. Many people find its menus a little easier to learn.
Method 3: Open a DXF file in AutoCAD
If you have AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT, opening a DXF is simple.
- Open AutoCAD.
- Type OPEN and press Enter, or click the Open icon.
- In the Files of type list, choose DXF (*.dxf).
- Find your file and click Open.
AutoCAD opens the DXF as a normal drawing. When you save, it asks if you want to keep the DXF format or save as DWG. Choose DXF if you need to send it to a laser shop or another program.
How to open a DXF file on each device
Here is the quickest method for each device, with the exact steps.
Windows 10 and 11
Windows has no built-in DXF viewer. If you double-click a DXF file, Windows asks which app to use. The quickest fix is the online viewer. Open it in Edge or Chrome and drag the file from File Explorer onto the page. If you want a desktop app, install DWG TrueView or LibreCAD.
Mac
Preview and Quick Look cannot show DXF files. Open Safari or Chrome, go to the online DXF viewer and drag the file in from Finder. For editing, install LibreCAD or QCAD. Our full guide on how to open DXF files on a Mac covers more options.
iPhone and iPad
- Save the DXF file to the Files app. If it came by email, tap the attachment and choose Save to Files.
- Open Safari and go to the online viewer.
- Tap Choose DXF file, then tap Browse and pick the file.
- Pinch to zoom and drag with one finger to move.
See our iPhone and iPad DXF guide for tips on large files.
Android
- Download the DXF to your phone. It usually lands in the Downloads folder.
- Open Chrome and go to the online viewer.
- Tap the file button and pick the DXF from Downloads or Google Drive.
- Turn your phone sideways for a wider view.
More detail is in our guide to open DXF files on Android.
Chromebook
Chromebooks cannot run most CAD programs. A browser viewer is the easiest answer. Read our guide to open DXF files on a Chromebook for the full steps and a few extra options.
How to open a DXF file for cutting machines
If you plan to cut the drawing on a laser, CNC router or vinyl cutter, open it in your machine software. That way the cut lines are ready to go.
- Laser cutters: import the DXF into LightBurn or your machine’s own software. See our LightBurn DXF guide.
- Cricut: upload the DXF in Design Space. See DXF files for Cricut.
- Silhouette: open the DXF in Silhouette Studio. See our Silhouette Studio guide.
Before you cut, open the file in a viewer first. Check the size and look for stray lines. A two minute check can save a sheet of material.
What to do if the DXF file will not open
Sometimes a DXF file refuses to load. Here are the usual causes and how to fix them.
- It is a binary DXF. Some programs only read the text version. Open the file in a CAD program and save it again as ASCII DXF.
- It is really a DWG. A renamed DWG will not open as DXF. Convert it first with our DWG to DXF guide.
- The screen looks empty. The drawing may be tiny or far away. Press fit or double-click to zoom to the whole drawing. Check that layers are turned on.
- The download broke. Download the file again and retry.

Tips for opening DXF files
- Check the units. A DXF can be drawn in millimeters or inches. If a part looks 25 times too big or too small, the units are probably mixed up.
- Look at the layers. Layers often split cut lines from notes and dimensions. Hiding the notes makes a drawing much easier to read.
- Keep a copy of the original. If you edit and save the file, keep the first version too.
- Use a light background to print. Dark lines on white print and read better in reports.
How to share a DXF file with someone who has no CAD software
Many people open a DXF only because someone sent it to them. The reverse happens too. You may need to send a drawing to a client, a builder or a family member who has no CAD tools. Here are three easy ways to do it.
- Send the DXF and a link. Attach the file and add a link to the online DXF viewer. They can open it in their browser with no setup.
- Send a picture. Open the DXF in the viewer, switch to the light background and save a PNG. Anyone can open a PNG on any phone or computer.
- Send an SVG. An SVG stays sharp when people zoom in. It opens in any web browser.
If the drawing needs to be printed at a certain scale, send a PDF made in a CAD program instead. A screenshot will not keep the exact scale.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open a DXF file without AutoCAD?
Use a free online viewer, DWG TrueView, LibreCAD or QCAD. Our guide on how to view DXF without AutoCAD compares these options.
Can I open a DXF file in Word or Excel?
No. Office apps cannot read DXF files. Save the drawing as a PNG from a viewer, then insert the image into your document.
Can I open a DXF file in Photoshop?
Photoshop is not a good choice for DXF files. Use Illustrator or Inkscape for vector work. See how to open DXF in Illustrator.
Why does my DXF file open as text?
A text DXF is plain text, so Notepad will open it as rows of numbers. That is normal. Open it in a DXF viewer to see the drawing.
What is a DXF file used for?
DXF files share drawings between programs. They are common for laser cutting, CNC, architecture and engineering. Read what is a DXF file to learn more.
