What Opens DXF Files? Every Program Listed
You have a DXF file and no idea what to open it with. That is a common problem. The good news is that DXF is one of the most widely supported drawing formats in the world. Dozens of programs can read it, and many of them are free.
This guide lists the programs that open DXF files, sorted by what you want to do. Some only let you look. Others let you edit, cut or print. Pick the one that fits your job.
The short answer: if you only want to see the drawing, use a free online DXF viewer. It runs in your browser, needs no install and works on any device. If you need to edit the file, use LibreCAD, QCAD or AutoCAD.
What is a DXF file, in one paragraph?
DXF stands for Drawing Exchange Format. Autodesk created it in 1982 so CAD programs could share drawings. A DXF file stores lines, arcs, circles, text, layers and blocks as plain text or binary data. Because the format is public, most design and cutting software can read it. You can learn more in our guide what is a DXF file.
Free online DXF viewers
An online viewer is the fastest way to open a DXF. You do not install anything. You just pick the file and look.
1. Our free online DXF viewer
The DXF viewer on our home page opens files right in your browser. Your file never leaves your device, so it stays private. You can zoom, pan, turn layers on and off, measure distances and save a PNG or SVG copy. It works on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android.
2. Autodesk Viewer
Autodesk runs a free web viewer that opens DXF, DWG and many 3D formats. You need a free Autodesk account, and your file is uploaded to their cloud. It is a good pick when you also need to share a link with a team.
Free desktop programs that open DXF files
If you open DXF files often, or need to edit them, a desktop program makes sense. These cost nothing.
3. LibreCAD
LibreCAD is free, open source 2D CAD software. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. It opens DXF files and saves them too, so you can make real changes. The interface looks a little old, but it is light and fast.
4. QCAD
QCAD is another 2D CAD program. The Community Edition is free and open source. It reads and writes DXF with clean results. Many people find it easier to learn than LibreCAD.
5. FreeCAD
FreeCAD is a free 3D modeling program. It can import DXF files and use them as sketches for 3D parts. Pick it if your DXF is the start of a 3D design.
6. Autodesk DWG TrueView
DWG TrueView is a free Windows app from Autodesk. It views DWG and DXF files and can convert DWG files between versions. It is a big download, but it shows drawings exactly as AutoCAD would.
7. Inkscape
Inkscape is a free vector drawing app. It imports DXF files so you can turn CAD outlines into signs, stickers or laser art. It works best with newer DXF versions. See our guide to import DXF into Inkscape.
Paid CAD programs that open DXF files
Professional CAD software opens DXF with full support for layers, blocks and dimensions.
8. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT
AutoCAD is the program that created the format, so it opens every DXF file. AutoCAD LT is the cheaper 2D version. Both need a paid subscription. You can open a DXF with the normal Open command, or insert it into another drawing as a block.
9. BricsCAD
BricsCAD works much like AutoCAD and reads DXF and DWG files natively. It sells as a one-time license or a subscription.
10. SolidWorks
SolidWorks opens DXF files through an import wizard. You can bring the drawing in as a 2D sketch and build a part from it.
11. Autodesk Fusion
Fusion can insert a DXF into a sketch. There is a free personal use license with some limits. Our guide to import DXF into Fusion 360 shows the steps.
12. SketchUp Pro
SketchUp Pro imports DXF and DWG files. The free web version of SketchUp does not. Keep that in mind before you try.
13. Rhino
Rhino reads DXF files and keeps layers intact. It is popular with jewelry, product and boat designers.
14. Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW
Both graphic design programs can open DXF files as vector art. That helps when a CAD drawing needs to become a print or a logo. See how to open DXF in Illustrator.
Cutting machine software that opens DXF files
DXF is the main file type for laser cutters, CNC routers, plasma tables and vinyl cutters. These programs read it directly.
15. LightBurn
LightBurn is laser software for many machine brands. It imports DXF files and lets you set cut, score and engrave settings by layer. Read our LightBurn DXF guide.
16. Cricut Design Space
Cricut Design Space accepts DXF uploads. It turns the outlines into cut lines for your Cricut. See our guide to DXF files for Cricut.
17. Silhouette Studio
Silhouette Studio opens DXF files, even in the free Basic Edition. Our Silhouette Studio DXF guide explains the steps and the common scale problem.
18. Vectric VCarve and Aspire
These CNC router programs import DXF files and create toolpaths from them. They are paid, but very common in woodworking shops.
Other programs that open DXF files
19. QGIS
QGIS is free mapping software. It opens DXF files as map layers. Surveyors and city planners use it to view site plans on a map.
20. Blender
Blender is a free 3D app. It can import DXF files through its DXF import add-on. You can then extrude the lines into 3D shapes.

Which program should you use?
Start with what you need to do. Then pick the simplest tool that does it.
- You just want to look at the drawing. Use the free online viewer. It takes seconds and keeps your file private.
- You need to check a size. The online viewer has a measure tool that snaps to corners and line ends.
- You need to change the drawing. Use LibreCAD or QCAD for free. Use AutoCAD if you already pay for it.
- You want to cut it. Open it in the software that runs your machine, such as LightBurn, Cricut Design Space or VCarve.
- You need 3D. Try FreeCAD, Fusion or Blender.
Opening DXF files on phones and tablets
Phones do not come with a DXF opener. The easiest fix is a browser based viewer. It works the same on iPhone and Android. You tap the file button, pick the drawing and pinch to zoom. We have full guides for opening DXF on iPhone and opening DXF on Android. Autodesk also has a mobile AutoCAD app, but it needs an account.
What if your DXF file will not open?
Most DXF files open in any of the programs above. When one fails, the cause is usually simple.
- The file is a binary DXF and the program only reads text DXF.
- The file is really a DWG that someone renamed.
- The file is damaged from a broken download.
- The drawing is there, but zoomed far away or hidden on layers that are turned off.
Our guide DXF file not opening walks through each fix. If you have a DWG, see how to convert DWG to DXF first.
Frequently asked questions
Can Windows open DXF files without extra software?
No. Windows has no built-in DXF viewer. Use an online viewer, DWG TrueView or a free CAD program.
Can a Mac open DXF files?
Not on its own. Preview cannot show DXF files. Use a browser based viewer or a free app like LibreCAD. Our Mac DXF guide has the steps.
Is DXF the same as DWG?
No. DWG is the native AutoCAD format. DXF is the open format for sharing. Read DXF vs DWG for the full comparison.
What is the best free program to open DXF files?
For viewing, a free online viewer is fastest. For editing, LibreCAD and QCAD are the best free picks.
