DXF vs DWG: What Is the Difference?

DXF and DWG are the two best known CAD file formats. Both come from Autodesk. Both can hold the same drawing. So why are there two, and which one should you use?

The short answer: DWG is for working, DXF is for sharing. DWG is AutoCAD’s own format. DXF is an open exchange format that almost any program can read. The rest of this guide explains the differences in detail, so you can pick the right one every time.

What is a DWG file?

DWG is the native file format of AutoCAD. When you click Save in AutoCAD, it saves a DWG by default. The name comes from the word drawing. DWG files store everything AutoCAD knows about a drawing: geometry, layers, blocks, styles, layouts, settings and custom objects.

The DWG format is closed. Autodesk does not publish full details of how it works. Other companies have reverse engineered it, so many programs can read DWG today, but support varies. Some free tools cannot open DWG at all.

What is a DXF file?

DXF stands for Drawing Exchange Format. Autodesk created it in 1982 and published how it works. The goal was simple: let other programs read and write AutoCAD drawings. Because the format is public, nearly every CAD, design and cutting program supports it. Learn more in what is a DXF file.

DXF vs DWG at a glance

DXF DWG
Full name Drawing Exchange Format Drawing
Made by Autodesk Autodesk
Format Public and documented Closed
Stored as Plain text (ASCII) or binary Binary
File size Larger Smaller
Program support Almost universal Wide, but not universal
Free tools that open it Many Fewer
Cutting machines Standard format Rarely accepted
Best for Sharing and manufacturing Daily work in AutoCAD

The key differences explained

1. Openness

This is the biggest difference. Anyone can read the DXF specification and write software that opens it. That is why a laser cutter, a sign program and a web viewer can all read the same DXF. DWG is a closed format. Programs that open DWG rely on reverse engineering or paid libraries.

2. File size

A text DXF stores every number as readable text. That takes more room. The same drawing as a DWG can be several times smaller. For a simple part, this does not matter. For a big building model, it can mean the difference between a file you can email and one you cannot.

3. Speed

Because DWG is compact binary data, AutoCAD opens and saves it faster. Big DXF files take longer to load, especially on older computers.

4. Features

Both formats can store the same basic geometry. But DWG keeps some AutoCAD specific details more reliably, such as custom objects from add-ons like Civil 3D. When those are saved to DXF, other programs may skip them. For plain lines, arcs, text and layers, the two formats are equal.

5. Compatibility

DXF works almost everywhere. DWG works well in AutoCAD and in programs that license DWG support, such as BricsCAD. In free tools, DWG support is hit or miss. LibreCAD, for example, is built around DXF.

6. Readability

You can open a text DXF in Notepad and see what is inside. That helps when you need to find a problem, such as a missing layer or wrong units. A DWG is unreadable without CAD software.

When to use DXF

  • Sending to a laser, CNC, plasma or waterjet shop. DXF is the standard. Many machine programs do not read DWG at all. See our guide on free DXF files for cutting.
  • Sharing with someone who does not use AutoCAD. They can open it in a free tool or our online DXF viewer.
  • Moving a drawing into a design app. Illustrator, Inkscape, Cricut Design Space and LightBurn all read DXF.
  • Archiving drawings for the long term. An open format is easier to read years from now.

When to use DWG

  • Working inside AutoCAD every day. DWG is faster and keeps every setting.
  • Sharing with another AutoCAD user. They get the exact file you have.
  • Large projects. Smaller files are easier to store and send.
  • Drawings with add-on objects. Civil 3D, Plant 3D and similar tools work best with DWG.

How to convert between DXF and DWG

DWG to DXF

In AutoCAD, open the DWG, choose Save As and pick a DXF type from the list. If you do not have AutoCAD, the free ODA File Converter can turn DWG files into DXF on Windows, Mac and Linux. Our full guide on how to convert DWG to DXF covers every method.

DXF to DWG

In AutoCAD, open the DXF and save it as DWG. Without AutoCAD, use ODA File Converter again and set the output to DWG.

Which version should you pick?

Both formats have versions that follow AutoCAD releases. Newer versions hold more features. Older versions open in more programs. For DXF files headed to cutting machines or older software, R12 or 2000 is a safe choice. For DWG files going to another AutoCAD user, match their version.

A real example: sending a part to a laser shop

Say you designed a steel bracket in AutoCAD. Your drawing is a DWG with the part outline, holes, dimensions, a title block and some notes. Now you need ten of them laser cut.

If you send the DWG, the shop may not be able to open it. Even if they can, their machine software will try to cut everything, including the title block and the dimension arrows. Someone has to clean it up first, and that costs time and money.

The better way is to make a clean DXF. Copy only the part outline and holes into a new drawing. Make sure the units are millimeters or inches as the shop expects. Then save it as DXF, version R12 or 2000. Open the result in a viewer to check it, look for doubled lines and confirm the size with a measure tool. Our online DXF viewer is handy for this last check. Now the shop can load your file and cut it straight away.

How other programs handle DXF and DWG

Program Opens DXF? Opens DWG?
AutoCAD Yes Yes
BricsCAD Yes Yes
LibreCAD Yes Limited
QCAD Community Yes No, Pro version only
Inkscape Yes No
Illustrator Yes Yes
LightBurn Yes No
Cricut Design Space Yes No
SolidWorks Yes Yes
Our online viewer Yes No

The pattern is clear. Every tool on the list opens DXF. DWG support drops off as soon as you leave professional CAD software. That is the main reason DXF is the safer format to send. You can see more programs in our list of what opens DXF files.

Common myths about DXF and DWG

Myth: DXF loses quality

Not true for normal drawings. Lines, arcs, circles and text come through exactly. Only special AutoCAD objects might change.

Myth: you can rename DWG to DXF

No. Changing the file extension does not change what is inside. A renamed DWG will fail to open as a DXF. You must convert it properly.

Myth: DWG is always better

DWG is better inside AutoCAD. Outside AutoCAD, DXF is usually the safer choice.

Can a DXF or DWG carry viruses?

Drawing files are data, not programs. A plain DXF or DWG cannot run code by itself. The risk comes from fake files, such as a program renamed to look like a drawing. Only open files from people you trust, and check that the file really ends in .dxf or .dwg.

How to open DXF and DWG files

To open a DXF, use our free online DXF viewer. It runs in your browser and keeps the file on your device. To open a DWG for free, use Autodesk’s DWG TrueView on Windows or Autodesk Viewer online. Or convert it to DXF first. See view DXF without AutoCAD for more options.

The bottom line

Keep your working files as DWG if you use AutoCAD every day. Send DXF whenever a drawing leaves your desk, whether it goes to a client, a supplier or a machine. That simple rule avoids most of the “I cannot open your file” emails. And when you receive a DXF, you can check it in a browser in seconds before you do anything else with it.

Frequently asked questions

Is DXF the same as DWG?

No. They can hold the same drawing, but DWG is AutoCAD’s closed native format and DXF is the open exchange format.

Which is better for laser cutting, DXF or DWG?

DXF. It is the standard format for laser, CNC and plasma software.

Why is my DXF bigger than my DWG?

Text DXF files store numbers as readable text. DWG uses compact binary data, so it is smaller.

Can I open a DWG in a DXF viewer?

Usually not. Convert it to DXF first, or use DWG TrueView.

Does converting DWG to DXF change my drawing?

Plain geometry stays the same. Special add-on objects may need to be exploded first.
