How to Open a DXF File in Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator is built for design, but it reads CAD files too. That is handy when an architect sends a DXF floor plan that needs to become a poster, or when an engineer’s part outline needs to become a laser engraved sign. Illustrator can also save DXF files, so you can send designs back to CAD and cutting software.
This guide shows how to open a DXF in Illustrator with the right scale, clean it up, and export a DXF that cutting machines will accept.
Can Illustrator open DXF files?
Yes. Illustrator opens DXF and DWG files through its AutoCAD import. Lines, arcs, circles, polylines, text and layers come in as editable vector paths. You can recolor them, change line weights, add fills and use them in any layout.
Before you start, it helps to know what a DXF is. Read what is a DXF file for a quick overview.
Check the DXF before you open it
Open the file in our free online DXF viewer first. This gives you a reference for size and layers.
- Measure a known edge with the ruler. You will use it to confirm the scale in Illustrator.
- Note the units shown in the status bar.
- Check the layers so you know which ones to keep.
How to open a DXF in Illustrator
- In Illustrator, choose File, then Open.
- Select your DXF file. If it is grayed out, set the file type list to All Formats.
- Click Open. The DXF/DWG Options dialog appears.
- Pick your scale and layout options, explained below.
- Click OK.
You can also use File, then Place to add a DXF to an existing document.
The DXF/DWG import options explained
Layout
CAD drawings can have model space and several layouts. Pick the one you want. Model is the main drawing. Layouts are print sheets with title blocks.
Scale
This is the most important setting.
- Original Size keeps the drawing at its true size, if the units are set in the file. Use this for laser and cutting work.
- Scale to Fit Artboard shrinks or grows the drawing to fit your page. Good for posters and presentations, but the size is no longer real.
- Scale lets you set a ratio, such as 1 millimeter in Illustrator equals 100 units in the drawing. Use this for scaled architectural plans.
Scale Lineweights
If checked, line weights scale with the drawing. For most uses, leave it off so lines stay a normal thickness.
Center Artwork and Merge Layers
Center Artwork places the drawing in the middle of the artboard. Merge Layers puts everything on one layer. Leave Merge Layers off if you want to keep the CAD layers, which is usually better.
Confirm the scale
After opening, select a known edge and look at its size in the Transform panel. Compare it with what you measured in the viewer. If it is off by 25.4, the drawing is in inches and Illustrator read it as millimeters, or the reverse. Reopen the file with the right scale option, or resize the artwork with the proportions locked.
Cleaning up CAD lines in Illustrator
CAD drawings are built for accuracy, not looks. A few cleanup steps make them easier to work with.
Ungroup and release clipping
Imported DXF art often comes in groups and clipping masks. Select all and choose Object, then Ungroup, a few times. Use Object, then Clipping Mask, then Release if needed.
Join broken paths
CAD shapes may be split into separate lines. Select the pieces of one shape and press Join, Command or Control and J. This makes a single path you can fill.
Delete what you do not need
Remove dimensions, notes, hatches and title blocks if they are not part of your design. Hiding and locking layers in the Layers panel makes this faster.
Fix line weights and colors
Imported lines may be hairlines or odd colors. Select by layer and set a stroke weight and color that suit your design.
Replace text
CAD fonts may not exist on your computer, so Illustrator substitutes them. Retype key text in your own font if it matters.
How to export a DXF from Illustrator
When your design needs to go to a laser, CNC or CAD program, export it as DXF.
- Choose File, then Export, then Export As.
- Set the format to AutoCAD Interchange File (DXF).
- Click Export. The DXF/DWG Export Options dialog opens.
- Set the AutoCAD version. Pick 2000 or 2004 for wide compatibility.
- Set the scale so 1 unit equals 1 millimeter, or inches if your shop works in inches.
- Choose Maximum Editability rather than Preserve Appearance. It keeps clean vector lines.
- Tick Outline Text so text exports as shapes, not fonts.
- Tick Export Selected Art Only if you only want part of the file.
- Click OK.
Prepare the art before export
- Expand strokes you want cut as shapes, using Object, then Expand.
- Remove fills and effects that a cutter cannot use, such as shadows and gradients.
- Delete hidden or locked objects that should not be cut.
- Make sure cut lines are closed paths.
Check the exported DXF
Open the new DXF in our online DXF viewer. Measure a known edge. Make sure nothing extra came along, like a hidden border. Then send it on.
A real example: turning a floor plan into a poster
An architect sends a DXF of a house plan. The client wants a framed poster of it. Here is how a designer handles it in Illustrator.
- Open the DXF with Scale to Fit Artboard on an A2 page, since exact size does not matter for a poster.
- Ungroup the art and release clipping masks.
- Hide the dimension, furniture and text layers in the Layers panel.
- Select the wall layer and give it a thick dark stroke. Give doors and windows a thinner stroke.
- Add room names in a clean font, the owner’s name and the address.
- Add a soft background color and export a print ready PDF.
An hour later, a technical CAD file has become a piece of wall art.
A real example: a CAD part as a laser engraved sign
An engineer has a DXF of a bracket and wants it engraved on a wooden plaque with the company name. Open the DXF at Original Size in millimeters. Confirm the width matches the viewer. Delete the dimensions. Add the text and outline it. Put the bracket outline and text on one layer for engraving and draw the plaque border on another for cutting. Export as DXF 2000, with 1 unit equal to 1 millimeter. Then check the export in a viewer and send it to the laser.
Common Illustrator DXF problems
The DXF is grayed out in the Open dialog
Change the file type list to All Formats. If it still fails, the file may be binary or damaged. See DXF file not opening.
The drawing is huge or tiny
Use Original Size with the right units, or set a custom scale on import.
Everything is one big group
Ungroup several times and release clipping masks.
Curves look jagged after export
Some versions and settings break curves into short lines. Try a different AutoCAD version in the export options.
The laser shop says the file is the wrong size
The export scale did not match their units. Re-export with 1 unit equal to 1 millimeter, or ask what they need.
Work faster with layers
CAD drawings often have dozens of layers with names like A-WALL or M-DUCT. Do not delete them blindly. Open the Layers panel and toggle each one to see what it holds. Lock the layers you want to keep, then select all and delete the rest in one step. Rename the layers you keep with simple names, like Walls and Doors. This makes the file much easier to edit later and to hand over to someone else.
Illustrator or Inkscape?
If you do not have an Adobe subscription, Inkscape is a free alternative that opens and saves DXF files. It is a little less polished, but it handles most cut file jobs. See our guide to import DXF into Inkscape. For pure CAD work, see our list of programs that open DXF files.
Frequently asked questions
Can Illustrator open DWG files too?
Yes, with the same import dialog. Or convert to DXF first with our DWG to DXF guide.
Which DXF version should I export for laser cutting?
2000 or 2004 is a safe choice. Very old machine software may need R12.
Why are my fills missing in the exported DXF?
DXF is mainly a line format. Cutters follow lines, not fills, so this is normal.
Can I use the DXF in LightBurn after exporting?
Yes. See our LightBurn DXF guide.
How can I view a DXF without Illustrator?
Use our free viewer or see view DXF without AutoCAD.
Check your DXF before and after
Open your file in our free DXF viewer before importing to Illustrator and again after exporting. It takes seconds and catches scale and stray object problems early.
